How to build your first prototype on a small budget
A prototype is the first time your idea becomes something you can hold. It does not need to be perfect; each version just needs to answer one clear question.
1. Decide what you want to prove
- Looks-like prototype: shape, size and feel
- Works-like prototype: does the technical idea actually work
- Integrated prototype: both together, ready for user testing
2. Start with the simplest tool
Cardboard, sketches and free design software are enough at first. Then 3D printing, laser cutting and off-the-shelf electronics cut time and cost.
3. Use labs and maker spaces
Many universities, incubators and makerspaces in the UAE offer equipment, labs and expertise at reasonable cost. Ask about programmes for your stage before buying equipment.
4. If someone else builds it
- Write a clear brief with drawings and dimensions
- Get more than one quote and timeline
- Agree in writing who owns the files and designs
- Sign an NDA before sharing technical details
5. Document every version
Record what changed in each version and why, with photos and dates. It helps your testing and later your IP file.
6. How Inov71 helps
The Inov71 AI assistant helps you set goals and tasks for each prototype in the Prototype stage, and the supplier directory lists manufacturers and experts you can contact.
This guide is general information. Choose tools and partners based on your product, and follow each lab’s usage and safety rules.
