How to protect your idea in the UAE: a simple guide for innovators

Many innovators lose protection for a simple reason: they share too early. This guide covers the basics in plain words before you speak to an IP adviser.

1. Start with confidentiality

Publishing your invention's details before filing can destroy its novelty, which may prevent registration later. Don't post technical details on social media or in public pitches before consulting an expert.

  • Share the general idea only when needed, and keep how it works to yourself
  • Use a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) before sharing details
  • Keep dated records: sketches, photos, notes

2. Know which protection fits

  • Patent: a new technical solution with an inventive step and industrial applicability
  • Utility certificate: simpler technical improvements, with a shorter term than a patent
  • Trademark: your product's name and logo
  • Industrial design: the product's appearance
  • Copyright: software, content and artistic designs

3. Where to file in the UAE

The UAE Ministry of Economy is the authority for patents and trademarks. Protection is territorial, so it applies in the country where you register. If you plan to sell abroad, ask your adviser about international filing through the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT); the UAE is a member.

4. Prepare a clear description

  • The problem it solves
  • Existing solutions and why they fall short
  • How your invention works, step by step
  • Drawings or illustrations
  • What exactly is new

5. How Inov71 helps

On Inov71 you describe your idea to the AI assistant, which organises it with you, and a dedicated IP track helps you prepare a structured disclosure draft to take to a licensed adviser. Your idea stays yours, and no one sees it without your permission.

This guide is general information, not legal advice. For a formal filing consult a licensed IP adviser or agent, and check current procedures and fees on the Ministry of Economy's official website.
