How to register a trademark in the UAE: a simple guide
Your product name and logo are among your most valuable assets. Registering early stops someone else from claiming the name after you have built a reputation on it.
1. Choose a name you can protect
Names that simply describe the product are hard to protect. Invented or less obvious names are stronger and easier to register.
- Avoid generic descriptive words such as “best” or “fast”
- Make sure it is not similar to a known mark in your field
- Check that the domain and social handles are available
2. Search before you file
Before filing, search registered trademark databases for identical or similar marks. This saves fees and time if an application would be refused later.
3. Pick the right classes
Trademarks are registered by classes of goods and services under the international Nice Classification. Choose classes that cover your product today and your near-term plans; each class has its own fee.
4. File with the competent authority
The UAE Ministry of Economy handles trademark registration, and filing is done online. After examination the mark is published for an opposition period, then registered if no opposition succeeds.
- A clear image of the logo or the word mark
- Classes and the list of goods or services
- Applicant or company details
5. Renewal and going abroad
Protection is time-limited and must be renewed on time. It is also territorial: if you plan to sell outside the UAE, ask your adviser about international registration through the Madrid System.
6. How Inov71 helps
In the Inov71 IP track you add your trademark as its own asset and follow its stages and deadlines alongside the rest of your project journey.
